Why?

Last week, something terrible happened to this country.
Something so terrible, it will be one of those events people remember exactly where they were when they found out.
It will be one of those tragedies which force changes to be made.
One of those horrible moments in history where people feel more anxious about their safety.
Many people react in many ways to this devestating news.
Some react with fear, anger, denial, blame, hatred, numbness, and the list goes on.
Me?
Sadness.
Sadness for those families and their loss, sadness for the children who survived and the loss of their innocence, sadness for the shooter's family, sadness that I and every other teacher in this country feel a little bit less safe in our own classrooms, and sadness for parents everywhere who will now think, "What if this is the last time I see my child?" as they put them on the bus.
I don't know what the appropriate emotion is.
I think it will just take time for all of us to heal.
In the meantime, I, like all of us when faced with difficult times, remind ourselves of the blessings we have, forget to complain about the annoyances of life, and resolve to make the world (and our lives) better.
